The story behind Lume
It all began when a lady named Shannon Klingman became burdened with a mission of ending the stigma around men and women who suffered indiscriminately for their body odors. This was sparked from the period of her residency as an OB/GYN, during which she noticed many women coming to the doctor complaining of odors below the belt, and leaving with a false diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis. Even worse, they were prescribed antibiotics they didn’t actually need!
After much research, Shannon realised that the problem was more an external one, which required external solutions. And she got to work creating that very solution.
The endeavor started humbly, with Shannon crafting her own soaps and body washes from her very own home. The goal? To deliver a product that was easy to use, and provided its user with comfort and freshness for a full day.
Lume deodorants not only keep us clean, it also keeps the earth clean. They’re naturally-sourced and environmentally friendly, ensuring that its users can enjoy smelling good and feeling good. 🥰
Her products were an instant hit. Among the throngs of initial praises, there appeared a common theme among them: Fans all lauded the fact that the product gave them more confidence to go about their day, even if their activities entitled much perspiration.
Why you should trust us
Our team has spent over 15 hours extensively testing and researching the best wellness products, including Lume. Our goal is to find the best brands who care about your well-being and help people live better lives. We evaluate beauty products based on their quality, effectiveness and customer support.
We often ask ourselves a simple question: would we buy the product for ourselves and recommend it to our family and friends? This review is medically reviewed and thoroughly vetted by Zoey Low, our in-house dermatologist, wellness expert and product tester herself!
How we tested Lume
I’m constantly hearing the benefits of natural deodorant1Chen, Q. Evaluate the effectiveness of the natural cosmetic product compared to chemical-based products International Journal of Chemistry, 1(2), 57, but as much as I try to love it, I am still yet to find one that I like enough to stick with. I am a personal trainer by day, race runner by night. 🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️
So, I need a deodrant that is going to keep up with my lifestyle!
I had almost given up hope, but the reviews of Lume couldn’t escape me. So, I decided to give natural deodorant one last chance. I chose the Solid Stick and Tube bundle.
I was able to choose the scents I wanted for both products, which I thought was a nice touch. Each of the scents sounded so delicious, so I was happy that I could try two out instead of having to stick to just one. 😅
I chose the Warm Vanilla solid stick and the Coconut Crush cream tube.
I tested the cream deodorant out first, starting off my day with a liberal use. I had a busy day of training, so I needed good protection. 🥵🥵🥵
This product claims to offer 72-hour odor control, so I had high hopes that I could get through my working day. The scent was amazing and almost transported me to my own private Caribbean island.
The smell stayed with me all day, and I was even complimented on it a few times. 😋
I returned home confident that my new best friend had kept my odor under control throughout all of my workouts.
Day 2 was time to test out how the solid stick compared to the cream. I was pleasantly surprised by the cream deodorant, but I found it a little moist under my armpits after applying. I hoped that the solid stick would not cause this issue, but still be as effective as the first deodorant was.
Yep, the solid stick is the one for me. I was protected all day beneath a comforting blanket of warming vanilla scent. I could reapply quickly and easily throughout work, but for the most part, I didn’t really need to! 😎😎😎
The Lume Solid Stick deodorant is certainly my new favorite. I’ve already gifted it to some of my closest friends, and I’m almost finished with my second tube! 🥳
What’s so special about Lume?
We know what you’re thinking – there are a million deodorant brands, many of which cost close to nothing and have been sitting on supermarket shelves for decades. What makes Lume so special?
Clean for you, clean for Mother Nature
Perhaps one of Lume’s most outstanding qualities is how clean a brand it is.
Foremost, the brand prides itself in being totally clean for you. Lume is made from naturally-derived ingredients like aloe vera leaf juice, which contain anti-bacterial properties2Nejatzadeh-Barandozi, F. Antibacterial activities and antioxidant capacity of Aloe vera Springer Link Organic and medicinal chemistry letters, 3(1), 1-8.
It is also aluminum-free3Mousavi M, Vaghar MI. The relationship between use of aluminum-containing anti-perspirant and hair color with breast cancer. J Family Med Prim Care. 2021 and baking soda-free4Alanoud, & Al-Qahtani, M & Mshail, & Alqhtani, A & Alotaibi, Nafla & Ghada, & Almotawa, S & Aldosari, Sharifah & Hawa-Zen, & Alsahli, A & Samar, & Sahar, & Meshael, & Alqhtani, M & Alarifi, Waad & Eldesoukey, Rehab. (2021). Comparative Antimicrobial Studies between Commercial Deodorants, Alum, Sodium Bicarbonate and Lemon Against Sweat Odor Bacteria. 4. 1-5. 10.31031/CJMI.2021.04.000597, so that you can feel confident even if you’ve sensitive skin, or if you’re using it on areas of the body that are just a little more sensitive. (Haven’t yall ever wondered if deodorant could counter that rank under-boob sweat?) If anyone out there’s suffering from psoriasis or eczema, Lume’s got you. 🙆♀️ 🙆 🙆♂️
Did we also mention that Lume is 100% vegan and cruelty-free too? 🐶 🐱
The “pre-odorant” we need
As compared to typical deodorants which aim to simply cancel out foul smells with an even stronger scent, Lume actually works to prevent external body odor from happening in the first place. Lume then blocks the ability for bacteria to consume fluids like sweat, urine and blood, all of which lead to foul smells. and is clinically-proven to control odor anywhere on the body for 72 hours after. 🤯
That’s what makes Lume more of a “pre-odorant”, rather than a deodorant. For those looking to just apply at the start of the day and go about your daily routine unencumbered, Lume is the perfect solution for you! 🥳 🤩 Just bear in mind that since these deodorants aren’t formulated as antiperspirants, some perspiration is still to be expected (but hey, what’s so wrong about that?)
Clinically-tested and “Odor Guru” approved!
Don’t just take our word for it – the pros themselves have given their approval on this game-changing product. Princeton Consumer Research put Lume to the test in one of the hottest cities in the country, St. Petersburg, FL, during the hottest time of the summer.
Individuals suffering from BO underwent a 10-day period where they refrained from using any deodorant or antiperspirant products on their underarms, so they’d begin their “clean slate.” They then “primed” their pits with Lume for 3 days. On the 4th day, they applied Lume and put on a prepped white, cotton t-shirt to wear for the next 24 hours.
Subjects were then evaluated for body odor and graded at both 24 and 72 hours. The results were astounding. Even after a totally blind judging sesh without knowing which product was placed on which subject, the judges unanimously found that Lume deodorant completely blocked 100% of BO all day and continued to control odor for 72 hours. Talk about getting the job done. 💪
Another huge plus that many other deodorants don’t offer is how the deodorant leaves ZERO stains on your clothes. If you’ve ever had the traumatizing experience of throwing your hands in the air only to find a huge white patch at your armpits, you know just how crucial this is.
Flavors and formulations
Another huge thing we love about Lume is just how flexible it is. The brand very thoughtfully generated multiple formulations and a ton of different scents to suit every conceivable need and preference.
The brand offers 3 different formulations of the deodorant: The Original Cream Stick, the Cream Deodorant Tube and the Solid Stick.
The Original Cream Stick and the Cream Deodorant Tube hold the same water-based formula.
The Cream Deodorant Stick dispenses Lume through 3 small holes at the top of the applicator, simply by twisting the bottom of the stick. This helps with using the stick directly under the underarms, or swiping it across any other surface of the body as desired. ✌️
On the other hand, the Cream Deodorant Tube is exactly as its name describes: A cream stored in a tube, to be dispensed by squeezing! This easily allows the user to control the amount of cream dispensed, and fingertip application is necessary. 👌 For visual demonstrations, the Lume website contains handy photos and even links an application video!
On the other hand, the Solid Stick Deodorant was created specifically for the armpits, and features a more traditional application experience. Whereas the Cream Deodorants were adapted more for whole-body use, with the scent to fade over time, the solid stick best serves those who prefer the traditional deodorant usage which glides on dry and with a scent to linger for longer. 👍
That said, all 3 formulations feature the same clinically-proven, all-day, whole-body odor control excellence that Lume knows and does so well. In fact, customers have raved about keeping multiple formulations in their arsenal, and rotating between them!
The creative minds behind Lume have absolutely spoiled us rotten with the huge variety of scents available:
- Unscented: No essential oils, fragrance oils, or masking scents to cover up the scent of the raw ingredients. Perfect for those that are particularly sensitive to fragrances!
- Lavender Sage: The scent of lavender with a hint of clary sage
- Jasmine Rose: Prominent floral notes of jasmine & rose
- Silver Spruce: Woodsy & evergreen fresh
- Coconut Crush: Natural, freshly shaved coconut
- Clean Tangerine: Bright tangerine balanced with cooling herbals
- Warm Vanilla: Vanilla bean kissed with a hint of spice
- Bay Rum: Spiced bay rum leaf with a splash of citrus
- Sweet Lily: The delicate scent of lily with a hint of gardenia
- Twisted Lime: Lime & lemon citrus twist
- Sandalwood Citrus: The ever-popular sandalwood with a top note of citrus
- Pink Peony: Pink peony with a touch of rose & citrus
- Cucumber Melon: Cool cucumber with sweet melon
You’d be lying if you said these sweet flavor combos haven’t caught your eye!!! 😍 😍 😍
That said, do bear in mind that the deodorants aren’t intended to replace perfumes or colognes, and is lightly-scented with a blend of essential oils and naturally derived botanicals. So if it’s cherry blossoms wafting through the air as you strut past, you may not wanna get rid of your perfumes just yet! 😅
Do also check if the flavor you’re after is captured in the formulation you prefer – while all 3 formulations do feature most of the flavors Lume offers, there are a couple of exceptions.
All 3 formulations come in multiple combination packs which allow you to get a better bang for your buck with discounted prices, simultaneously allowing you to try multiple flavors at a go. If that’s not a win-win solution, I don’t know what is. #score 🤩
Lume body care
Although Lume’s ticket to fame is largely attributable to the success of its deodorant products, their other body products have ridden on the coattails of the company’s success and honestly aren’t too shabby at all either. 😎
The best pre-pre-odorant step is to take a good shower and wash off all the grime and sweat that would otherwise stink us up. For that, Lume has come up with a simple but effective body 5oz soap bar, with the following features:
- Plant-derived ingredients like sodium palmate and sodium cocoate5Burnett, C. L., Fiume, M. M., Bergfeld, W. F., Belsito, D. V., Hill, R. A., Klaassen, C. D., … & Alan Andersen, F. Safety Assessment of Plant-Derived Fatty Acid Oils International journal of toxicology, 36(3_suppl), 51S-129S which are gentle on your skin
- Naturally-scented with essential oils and other botanicals
- Free from sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens6Harley KG, Kogut K, Madrigal DS, Cardenas M, Vera IA, Meza-Alfaro G, She J, Gavin Q, Zahedi R, Bradman A, Eskenazi B, Parra KL. J Expo Sci Environ Epidemiol. 2013 and artificial dyes
- Hypoallergenic and safe for all external use
- Derived from sustainably sourced plant-based oils
In keeping with Lume’s generous flavor selection for its deodorants, the body soap range likewise features a ton of different scents, all of which are sold in individual bars, build-your-own-bundles or even some mini-soap bundle samplers! These delectable scents are:
- Lavender Sage
- Silver Spruce
- Jasmine Rose
- Coconut Crush
- Clean Tangerine
- Bay Rum
- Warm Vanilla
- Sweet Lily
- Twisted Lime
We especially love how the majority of the deodorant scents are now re-featured in these soaps, so if you’d like supreme smell-consistency or if you’ve just fallen head over heels with a scent, what’s stopping you from building a full body care collection around it? 😅😅😅
If bar soaps aren’t your deal, why not the fuss-free Body Washes offered by Lume? These are clinically proven to leave you smelling up to 3.5 times better than ordinary soap (how is that even possible!? 😍). These Body Washes contain a lower pH to eliminate odor reactions, and to support your skin’s protective acid mantle. The Body Soaps are gynecologist approved and highly recommended, so those with even sensitive skins should have no fear jumping right in.
These Body Washes come in 4 different scents: Unscented, Pink Peony, Cucumber Melon and Sandalwood Citrus. They’re sold in bundles and in 4-pack mini sampler packs, if you want to give multiple scents a shot! 👍
Exfoliating body butters
Finally, the line also includes an Acidified Body Butter which is clinically proven to improve your skin’s radiance and tone by gently and effectively exfoliating, hydrating and smoothing the skin’s surface. What makes Lume’s Body Butter special is that it’s powered by mandelic acid8Wójcik A, Kubiak M, Rotsztejn H. Influence of azelaic and mandelic acid peels on sebum secretion in ageing women. Postepy Dermatol Alergol. 2013, which is clinically proven to reduce bumps and redness associated with Keratosis Pilaris (a.k.a chicken skin), even in the long term. The Body Butter also helps build up a healthy acid mantle, which resists the formation of body acne. #YASplease 🙌🙌🙌
The Body Butters come in 4 yummy scents: Unscented, Cucumber Melon, Pink Peony and Sandalwood Citrus. They also come in bundles and 4-pack samplers for those who want to get a better bang for their buck or their hand at a couple of flavors at a go!
Comparison: Lume vs. Native
Native is another brand of natural deodorants that many people love. But which is best? 🤔
Lume offers stick and tube deodorants, while Native only offers sticks. They’re both vegan, free of aluminum, parabens, and sulfates.
However, Lume goes one step further here by being cruelty-free, free of artificial fragrances, baking soda, silicone, phthalates, and talc. 😍
Native is also only usable under your arms, while Lume is safe for use over your entire body.
Native does seem to be cheaper than Lume, with a stick being $12 compared to the latter’s $14-$18 price point. Native also offers a better discount for subscribers at 17% off while Lume only offers 8% off. 🤑🤑
Native also seems to offer more products and a wider range of scents.
However, Lume seems to be kinder to your skin and more effective, according to the reviews. It can also be used anywhere. So, which do you care more about – value for money or the quality of the product?
What other customers are saying
Don’t just take our word for it. Word on the street has it that Lume is a hot favorite, and for good reason. Many customers rave about how the product has radically improved their self-confidence and shifted their attention away from fear of poor hygiene and smells. 🥲
One customer claims, “Freedom of not smelling, I think that’s huge. I get to go to all kinds of amazing, beautiful places. Being out on the mountain for days, how do you handle body odor or cleanliness? It’s difficult. Finding Lumē this year was really nice to have. It made it easier to not be smelly around folks.”
Another customer raves, “I really did test it for 72 hours. It worked! Whenever I do chainsaw carvings, I get sweaty and dirty, especially when it’s hot. No matter how hard I work, Lumē’s gonna work harder for me. If you do anything that’s labor-intensive, that you sweat, then you definitely need Lumē.”
However, some customers have raised concerns about allergic reactions and rashes resulting from this, so if you’ve particular sensitive skin or specific allergies, be sure to check with your healthcare provider before giving it a go. 💪🏻
Is it worth it?
All in all, we don’t have enough good things to say about Lume. Sure, they’re an investment at the price they command, but you pay for what you get.
We especially love the wholesome outcome that the brand’s managed to achieve with these palm-sized wonders: It isn’t easy to restore confidence and boost esteem through a daily hygiene product, and Lume’s somehow hit the spot.
If you’re in the market for a deodorant you can trust (and why wouldn’t you be?!), we couldn’t recommend Lume more highly for an all-around (literally) comfort for your everyday. 🙌🏼
Lume is currently offering 10% off your first purchase when you use the discount code 10NEW on checkout.
